Joseph Svenden, a 47-year-old schoolteacher and farmer, lives with his dying mother and has a long-time relationship with Rosealee, his best friend's widow, who also teaches at the two-room schoolhouse. When Catherine, a 17-year-old student, enrolls in their class, Joseph begins an affair with her despite knowing it is wrong.
