"Exiled to China in the 1930s due to a scandal involving his drug habit, Antoine, once a revered Parisian physician, finds himself adrift in unfamiliar territory. En route, he encounters a captivating yet enigmatic woman who becomes his unlikely companion. Upon reaching Shanghai, she introduces him to a clandestine group of European expatriates leading decadent lives, their sole purpose being the creation and maintenance of a 'Torture Garden' for personal amusement.
