Story
Frankie Paige, an atheist American woman living in Brazil, begins experiencing stigmata—wounds that mimic those of Jesus Christ's crucifixion. The Vatican sends Father Andrew Kiernan to investigate Frankie's case after news reaches them about a statue of the Virgin Mary crying blood and her face appearing on a building in São Paulo. Kiernan arrives in Brazil and learns about these miracles, but he is more concerned with Frankie's stigmata. He links up with Frankie and tries to help her as she becomes increasingly plagued by violent episodes related to her stigmata. Kiernan begins to question his faith and the church's teachings while trying to protect Frankie from sinister forces that seem to be targeting her.

The story intertwines Frankie's experiences with the Vatican's investigation into religious phenomena in Brazil, challenging the viewer's perceptions of faith and the supernatural.
