Story
In the distant future, Zardoz (voiced by John Colicos), a powerful entity residing in the Vortex, commands a savage tribe known as the Brutals who inhabit the Outlands. Among them is Zed (Sean Connery), an Exterminator trained to kill and propagate Zardoz's philosophy that procreation is evil. Zed accidentally discovers a secret passage leading into the Vortex. There, he finds a utopian society of immortal beings called the Eternals, led by May (Shelagh Fraser) and including Friend (Niall Buggy) and Consuela (Charlotte Rampling). The Eternals initially intend to study Zed before killing him but find his presence disrupts their stagnant lifestyle. Zed's brutal nature awakens both attraction and fear among the Eternals, exposing cracks in their supposedly perfect society.
Summary
Directed by John Boorman in 1974, 'Zardoz' is a thought-provoking science fiction film that explores themes of immortality, dystopia, and societal evolution. Set in a post-apocalyptic world divided between the advanced, immortal Eternals living in the Vortex and the savage Brutals dwelling in the Outlands, the movie follows Zed, an Exterminator who inadvertently breaches the Eternals' utopian society. 'Zardoz' challenges viewers to question societal norms, morality, and the consequences of achieving perfect equilibrium.
